The Winter Solstice

This year, the winter solstice is on December 21st.

It is the first day of winter (for the U.S. and other countries in the Northern Hemisphere).

It is the year’s shortest day and longest night.

It is the day with the shortest amount of daylight/sunlight.

If people get depressed about the cold winter and lack of sunlight.

We often think…

“We just have to make it until December 20th/21st. Then, each day we will get one more minute of sunlight.”

Until, the summer solstice on June 20th or 21st, when it is the longest day of the year.

The summer solstice is the day of the year with the longest amount of daylight/sunlight.

The winter and summer solstice may vary (change) from year to year, but only by a day or two.
